Stay safe around dogs!
Do not hug or kiss any dog! We like hugs around the neck and kisses on the face, but dogs DO NOT. One of the most common reasons for children being bit in the face is hugging a dog around the neck,or kissing them on the face. Most dogs enjoy being scratched on the chest or the side of the neck. If you want to make friends with a dog, and make their tails wag, scratch your dog and hug your Mom and Dad!
Be like a tree. If a strange dog approaches you, be like a tree. To be a tree, you will stop moving, (trees don't move) fold your branches (arms) in, watch your roots grow (eyes to your feet, watching the dog out of the corner of your eye). Dogs think trees are boring and they will go away. Dogs get really excited by movement and if you scream and run away, they might even think you are prey (something good to eat). Don't ever play rough with a dog, they don't understand humans don't have fur!
Never pet a dog you don't know. Some dogs look nice and friendly, but maybe they are not. It's very important to ask the owner for permission to pet their dog before you do so. If the owner is not around, don't take any chances!
Before you get your own dog. Before you get a dog of your own, you need to think about a few things. Does your family like to be outside often, or do you stay indoors more? Do your parents care if your dog will shed it's hair in the house? Some things that need to be done when you have a dog can be messy, like giving a dog a bath, and cleaning up the poo (eeewww). A dog needs care and attention everyday for its entire life, so it's a big commitment. Dogs can be so much fun, but be sure to think and talk with your parents before you get one.
